Community Flavors
COMMUNITY FLAVORS is designed for community engagement. RIBS hosts quarterly “potlucks’ at our home at the Southside Cultural Center of RI. People are invited to come and sit at table with “strangers.” We share food, enjoy a performance, then, w/ RIBS facilitators, people share stories with each other around the table. This program was inspired by Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona, a Lakota/Cherokee healer who is also a Western medical doctor. RIBS invited him to come and present a workshop called “The Healing Power of Storytelling for Individuals and Community.” At the end of the day long activities, Lewis said, “if you really want your community to be well, you need to gather regularly to eat and share stories. RIBS took that to heart, and community flavors is a program that leaves people well fed in body, mind, spirit and soul.
